Our Hobbit Party 2021

Happy Hobbit Day! Our tenth annual Hobbit Party was this past weekend and it was such a gift to spend so much time with our good friends. I’m so thankful to everyone who made the journey to celebrate with us, and for everyone who helped out while they were here. I couldn’t have done it without you all — and I wouldn’t have wanted to, either. Here’s to many more Hobbit Parties in the years to come.

On the Hobbit Party Menu & Recipes

Friday:

Saturday:

  • Charcuterie Board

  • Fruit & Vegetable Tray

  • Stuffed Mushrooms

  • Irish Beef Stew: Recipe Here

  • Shepherd’s Pie

  • Spinach & Mushroom Frittata (I didn’t use a recipe but this one looks similar to what I did: Recipe Here).

The Lord of the Rings Cocktails

  • Miruvor: For Miruvor, I mixed Vodka with Ginger Ale and added a little bit of Lavender Syrup to give it a more herbal flavor, then added in a few lime slices. Basically a Moscow Mule + Lavender

  • Ent Draught: I used the most mapley, woody whiskey I had on hand and then mixed it with a little Ginger Ale + Tonic Water. It tasted very sweet and tree-ish, which I think worked very well for Ent Draught. The particular whiskey we used was from Indiana Whiskey Co., and called Breakfast of Degenerates — it truly tastes like it has maple syrup in it! It’s too sweet to drink on its own but works well in this mixed drink, in my onion.

  • Shire-Water: This one was so easy - it’s just Jameson + Ginger Ale and a little lime. A local pub here serves this and calls it “Shire-Water” so it was perfect.

Can you tell we drank a lot of Ginger Ale this weekend? I’m not the best at mixing cocktails so this honestly just made things easier and everyone enjoyed them!

Games & Activities

  • Shelob’s Web: This was a favorite among the kids. I closed off a room in our basement and filled it with a giant ‘spider web’ made of white streamers and gave them swords to slash through it.

  • Po-Ta-Toes: Essentially this is corn-hole, but you use potatoes instead of bean bags!

  • Slay the Witch-King (as seen above): You’ll need some kind of scarecrow or ghostly looking creature (these are easy to find this time of year at Halloween stores), guests can either stab at it or shoot it with arrows! Whatever works!

  • Goblin Wars (as seen above): All you need is some cardboard, balloons, tacks, and darts. Have guests take turns throwing darts at the balloons to see who can pop the most.

  • Face Painting: My daughter set up shop in the basement and painted people’s faces all evening.

  • Coloring Contest: I set out some Lord of the Rings themed coloring pages and then my daughter chose a winner after dinner. We had a few prizes for the kids for this!

  • Flower Crown Making (as seen above): I simply set out the supplies and instructions and people wandered over to the flower crown area throughout the weekend.

  • Tolkien Trivia: I put together a 30-question Trivia game and had a few prizes for the winners (as well as one prize for the person with the lowest points — it was a copy of the Lord the Rings haha)

There are so many things I forgot to photograph in the chaos of the week’s celebrations, but I wanted to share as much as I could in hopes of inspiring anyone else who might be throwing a Hobbit Party of their own today. If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments and I’ll try to help you out!
