What it means to be a Hobbit at Heart
Many people want to imagine being a “hobbit at heart” as sitting around eating strawberries in the grass. But they forget how hard-won those strawberries are.
We think of Hobbits as quaint and twee, but there is strength hidden within them that would rival the greatest elf-lord. There is grit and courage beneath the surface.
I don’t aspire to be like a hobbit because I want to sit around at the pub all night eating mushrooms and bacon (although that does sound quite nice).
I aspire to be like a hobbit because I want to carry my friends when they need me. I want to defend the vulnerable. I want to give every last ounce of my strength for the destruction of evil. I want to trust that there is ‘something else at work’ guiding me towards goodness. I want to anchor myself to hope.
The safety of the Shire was never guaranteed. Instead, it was something hard-won by those who protected and defended it.
Please: always remember that it was the hands of the small who brought about the downfall of Sauron. Resist anyone who would disregard human rights and dignity in favor of profit, power, or efficiency. Put your love into action and, please, never lose heart. 🍓
