Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does the eBook include?

This eBook is over 30 pages long and includes detailed instructions for joining in on 30 Days in the Shire, along with a link to our private Discord server where you can connect with others on the same journey. For the challenge, you'll choose three new "Hobbity Habits" to put into practice over the next month, and then you'll be given 30 daily challenges to work through.

You'll also get explanations of each daily challenge along with a bit of inspiration for them. At the back of the book, there is a printable checklist & calendar for keeping yourself on track and a printable Lembas recipe.

What's the price point?

Thirty Days in the Shire is now available for free download!

How is this different from "30 Days to a Hobbit at Heart"?

30 Days to a Hobbit at Heart was basically our trial run for this whole idea. We had one printable checklist and that was it! Since then, I've expanded the challenge into this eBook so each daily challenge has a detailed explanation meant to encourage and inspire you. There are also links to resources such as helpful books and articles throughout. There are also more printables this time to help you stay on track.

Would this work for Lent?

Yes! The idea of slowing down, settling down, and letting go of your "Precious" is very compatible with Lent! However, I recommend bringing any sort of challenge to your spiritual director before committing to it -- just a generally good rule to live by!

Do we have to complete it in 30 days?

Nope! The eBook is yours forever once you download it, so you can go at your own pace.

Will it make sense if I haven't read The Lord of the Rings?

It helps to be familiar with Tolkien in general, but if you haven't read any of his works you will be fine! Part of the challenge involves reading some of Tolkien's lesser-known works, so hopefully this will be a good starting point for you to get into his writings.

Do I have to be a Christian to participate?

Absolutely not! Everyone is welcome. This challenge is inspired by Tolkien’s Hobbits as well as a few elements of his own Catholic faith which shaped his daily life, so you can expect a mixture of both in this guide. There are three daily challenges which relate specifically to his faith, but if you're in any way uncomfortable with those I invite you to modify them to fit your needs.  Everyone is welcome to participate in our community regardless of faith or belief.
